a good weekend; risks and water
Feb. 7th, 2005 12:09 pmSaturday I went hiking in the Sunol Regional Wilderness, with Rod and Rick and a couple of Rick's old workmates. Exactly how far we went (7 miles? 10?) I can't swear, but it was a good full day of hiking. My pace going up hill is pretty slow, but steady. After I got my second wind (which is a weird concept, but nonetheless seems to be true), it was a very good time. The initial more severe uphill was followed by more up and down, which is really pleasant. The area is "wilderness", which around here means it's also cow country. Grass, scattered oaks, plenty of poison oak, cows. We had a few close encounters with cows. Rod and I annoyed one for a time, in the progress discovering a large pond (which I imagine will be gone by July).
We tarried in Little Yosemite near the end of the trek. It is all rocks and waterfalls as the name implies, which is one of my favorite outdoor types of spaces. So I did some rock hopping, including psyching myself through two scary jumps (eventually). That and a conversation we had reminded me of a definition of fun I arrived at last week... accomplishing something you were slightly afraid of or challenged by. That's fun... taking a small risk and succeeding (especially when it's physical stuff). Rod took pictures of me, which also feels slightly risky... I'll see how those turned out! LOL I also took a scattering of pictures along the way.
The conversation (when it wasn't the three work reminiscing; they had a lot to talk about, and how often do you overhear snatches about mapping 15% of the human genome?) was a lot about politics and sex (what is ok for kids to see, abuse, etc). Rod and I were honored when one of our new friend's shared a piece of his personal history that he had never shared before (save for with his wife). There were some interesting discussion around rational 'vs' things like pleasure in horror films, and the need to actually act or not (e.g. is not acting when you see something bad condoning the perceived badness?)... which I suppose comes down to philosophy.
It was fun being playfuy at times, cows and rocks. Oh, we also found a string of about six different padlocks on the gate back out of the trail. We put forth a number of theories on why so many different padlocks. Hopefully the pictures will be cool.
Rod and I did regret we didn't think to take a bottle of wine. Afterwards, Rod and I went to Hayward, parked at the Rainbow Room, and stuffed ourselves at a neighboring Mexican restaurant (newly and garishly repainted, but the food still rocked). We then hung out til about 8:30, drinking Jack Daniels and Jamisons (respectively), and chatting with friend during ACLC's Cupid's Arrow event. I had fun smoking a cigar for about half an hour in the little smoking room; a place where you can actually hear conversation. :-)
Sunday I watched the superbowl with a couple of friends, just a social thing to do (football not on my interest list per say, but I have managed to watch a fair amount of it, having had a dad who was into it).
So, a good weekend.
