mad dogs and englishmen
Jul. 24th, 2006 02:40 pmI was the only person exercising on the creek trail today. ;-) what a surprise! Go heat wave (I don't mean that, honest).
I started by dousing my head with water at work before I even took off. Then kinda took it easy, but made my usual distance. Interesting that the 'take it easy' attitude works just as well... Even the squirrels, ducks, and geese are running about less, and standing around in odd, presumably cooler, places. Anyhow, I stopped near some picnic tables besides the lake I rode to, drank water, stretched. Then had the urge to go stand in one of the giant size sprinklers that were watering the grass (1:30pm is a BAD time to water, park dept!!).
It was great! I couldn't help smiling.
So I saddled back up... and then had to ride through the trailing edges of all three sprinklers, through mud and ruts, risking life, limb, and ipod. Happily, all came through unscathed. :-) It was great.
Of course, by the time I got back to work, I wasn't sure how much of my wet shirt was due to the sprinkler and how much to sweat, but at least I had the pleasure of the wind of my passage!
... hint: multiple packs of blue-type ice in one's sheets an hour before bed does wonders. Then a soft pack in a pillow case around the neck for bedtime (at least if you live in an un-air-conditioned upstairs apartment like I do).
