why is lying ok in political stuff?

I was appalled a week or so ago to see bizarre Yes on 8 signs, talking about schools and parents and government invasion in people's lives. (??). I've seen ads on tv which are *clearly* lying.
Why is that ok? I guess I don't know who is in position to sue these folks, but it sure seems like a good idea right now. Not that it would help the campaigns per say, but it's just *wrong* to baldly lie in public.
And now, in the 'service' of families, some Yes on 8 ads are using kids' images without their parents permission.
